Chile

Chile, an excellent tourist destination

Chile  is a small, narrow, and long country located in the southern cone of South America. It is a strip of land surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Andes Mountain Chain, and the Atacama Desert, insurmountable natural barriers. A country of extremes where the diverse landscapes, the climate and habitats will surprise and enchant you. For the most part, to think of Chile is to think about mountains, deserts, lakes, volcanoes, glaciers, islands, high plateaus, plains, rainforests, salt deposits, fjords, ice country, and an extensive coastline. (See A Look at Chile).

San Pedro de AtacamaWithout a doubt, other countries in this region could offer the same diverse geography, however, what is it that distinguishes Chile as a tourist destination? It is the infrastructure, the security, and the hospitality of its people.

The driest and most arid region of the country is found in the big north. The main cities, Arica, Iquique, and Antofagasta, are situated on the coastal strip, but the most attractive destinations can be seen in the Atacama Desert and the High Plateau. Lauca National Park and Los Flamencos National Reserve are the most important, protected areas of the big north. San Pedro de Atacama, the Geysers of Tatio, the salt deposits and the archaeological ruins of the high plateau cultures, are worth visiting.

Elqui ValleyThe small north is a region of great geographical contrasts, from the aridity of the desert to the fertility of the valleys across the way. The touristy city of La Serena is the entranceway to the famous Valle del Elqui (Elqui Valley), a rich and fertile valley known for its privileged climate and its pisco production, whose indisputable center is the tiny city of Pisco Elqui. Due to the cleanliness and clarity of the skies in this region during the major part of the year, they have installed important astronomic observatories: La Silla (The Chair), European Southern Observatory, Tololo, and Mamalluca.

SantiagoThe administrative, economic, and political activity of the country is concentrated within the central region, Owner of a benign climate and suitable for agriculture, it is here that one encounters the more traditional art of wine-making. Also located in this region are the most famous beach resorts of Chile and the best ski centers of South America: Portillo, Valle Nevado, La Parva and El Colorado-Farellones. The Archipelago of Juan Fernández is located at this same latitude but at more than 600 km (375 mi) off the coast. Not only do we find beach resorts and important cities in the central region, but there also exist a number of important protected wildlife areas such as: El Morado, Yerba Loca, Río Cipreses, La Campana and Radal 7 Tazas, to name a few of the more well-known.

The southern region embraces the area known as Los Lagos (the lakes). Here, the landscape becomes green and the climate more rainy and damp. This region offers a wide variety of attractions to the visitor: hot springs, ski centers, adventure tourism, beach resorts, traditional manifestations of the Mapuche culture, etc. Whoever visits the region of Los Lagos cannot miss such impressive places like Puyehue National Park, Petrohué Falls, the thousand larch forests, the island of Chiloé or the entertaining beach resort of Pucón.

Laguna San RafaelThe Northern Patagonia is a region where Chile appears to break up into small islands, of which the island of Chiloé stands out. Here one finds Austral Road, Elizalde Lake, Futaleufú river, Laguna San Rafael, and the ski center Cerro El Fraile. We also find important national parks and reserves such as Queulat, Río Simpson and Cerro Castillo.

Torres del Paine The last human settlements of the continent are located in the desolate Southern Patagonia, Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas are the biggest and most important cities of the region, however, Puerto Williams, located in Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire), is the southernmost city in the world. Located in the southern Patagonia are the famous Torres del Paine, the Magellan Straits, Cerro Mirador ski center and the penguins of Magdalena Island. These are among the most important attractions of the region.
