Description

The Chilean Antartic territory is located 990 km. to the South of Punta Arenas covering an area 1.250.000 square km. having very fragmented coastline segments. At its center there's Tierra de O'Higgins peninsula which is, actually, the continuation of Los Andes Mountain Range, also called "Antartandes".

Besides from the continental piece of land, there are many existing islands. To the North, there's Piloto Pardo, Clarence, Dundee, Joinville and D'Urville islands; to the East  Barrera de Hielos Larsen, Weddell Sea and the islands Vega, Seymour, Ross, Cerro Nevado and Robertson; Northwest, the Shetland Islands, which include Rey Jorge, Nelson, Robert, Greenwhich, Livingston, Decepción and Snow islands; West, you'll find the Bellingshausen Sea and nearby lands stretching across up to meridian 90° West, thus including the islands of Smith, Palmer, Low, Trinidad, Bravante, Anvers, Renaud, Serrano, Biscoe, Adelaida, Alejandro and Charcot.

Chilean sovereignty over Antartica rests assured due the existence of a number of base camps and refuges, such as the Presidente Frei Base, the Presidente Frei Meterological Center and Villa Las Estrellas, where numerous Chilean families live commited to scientific research. The latter is the major populated center throught Antartica and only receives 1200 people through the year, most of them tourists.

Tourism in Antartica demands being able to enjoy the view of the landscape and the acuatic life within.

To reach Antartica you need to go by plane from Punta Arenas and you have to remember that it's a flight subject to weather conditions. This is why we recomend you to ask first at Punta Arenas on possibilities to fix a flight.

Given its climate, Antartica features a tundra climate on the west mountain slope, an eastern slope with cold steppe climate and a central plateau with polar climate. The antartic islands, in turn, also have a tundra climate with abundant precpitations and low temperatures.

This hostile climate is not suitable for the existence of vegetation, this is why you can only find moss and lichen. However, its marine fauna is much varied, including blue whales, orcas, sea elephants, weddell seas, antartic wolves, adélie penguins, gentoo penguins, antartic king and emperor penguins, besides birds like the albatross, petrel and the antartic prion.

Though it seems a frozen wasteland, the Chilean Antartic Territory has many minning resources that can be exploited. Moreover, it features the exploitation of krill, a native crustacean used as whale's food.
