AMONG WOODS AND HILLS

The lagoons, rivers and hills in the park are the perfect frame for the exuberant and aged native woods lodging the existing fauna in the area.

With an ample surface to go through, it is specially attractive the Piedra de los Platos, which tells us about the presence of the old inhabitants of the area; or the Quebrada de los Coigües, ideal to be visited in winter time, when the snow reaches more than 20 centimeters, and the woods offers security and shelter.
It is the unquestionable kingdom of the nothofagus gender: oak, lenga, coigüe, and evergreen beech. Nevertheless, the great diversity of flora in this park includes high-interest species, such as the cordilleran cypress, laurel, hualo, mayten, and our national flower, lapagenia.
There are three Conaf rangers in charge of the park administration, who also give information to visitors and take care of the maintenance and respect for the ecological system in Altos del Lircay.
The contrasts in relief and vegetation overwhelm those who stroll along its paths.
The excursion paths lead the visitor along the diverse landscapes and environments existing in Altos del Lircay. Going through woods, and hills, and offering the possibility to admire the fauna of the park, including foxes, chillas (a small fox) and condors, among some others
The relief of the park is rugged.   The height varies from 600 to 2,448 meters above sea level. Hills such as El Peine, El Picazo, and Sal Si Puedes melt with sloping areas and low hills, such as Vega de los Treiles and Sillahur.
The lagoons Colorada and Tomate, plus one not named yet, are located about 2,000 meters above sea level. These, together with the ‘Lircay’ river and the brooks that increase it, compose the hydrography of the park. Only in the Lircay river it is possible to swim.
In Altos de Lircay, there are special areas prepared for picnics, but not for camping; then, just take a good look and pick out a warm and sheltered place to install the camp.
The denominated "piedras tacita", existing in Quebrada los Platos are an interesting example of the customs of the old inhabitants of the area, who used them, presumably, as community mortars.
