The Carretera Austral (CH-7) begins in Puerto Montt and ends in Caleta Yungay, and its construction started in 1979, the last stretch being inaugurated in 1996. Though some stretches need to be covered on ferryboats, the highway will take you into a world of incomparable, awe-inspiring beauty. It is a well-designed road with solid concrete bridges, but some parts are narrow and it lacks a good support infrastructure, making it necessary for travelers to carry enough gasoline.
