Hotels in Antofagasta

Antofagasta is the capital of the region bearing the same name, and has the fifth largest population in Chile. Its main economic activity is mining, and though Chilean investors had been exploiting saltpeter before the War of the Pacific started, it wasn't until its end that Antofagasta became part of Chilean territory.

Some of its attractions are the casino, La Portada National Monument, and the Historic Docks (or Melbourne Clark Saltpeter pier), both of which reflect a fascinating geography and a long standing mining tradition. There are several hotels, and near the city there is Lullaillaco National Park, home to guanacos and vicunas. You can get there by renting a car or taking a tour.
