Copiapó is the capital city of the region of Atacama, and it stands out for its long-standing mining tradition, associated with the beds of Chañarcillo and Tres Puntas. Its oasis are remarkable for its grapes, and lately the production of olives has become really strong. There are several hotels in Copiapó, with attractions like the city Casino and La Copiapó locomotive, part of the first Chilean railway. It is now a national monument.

In the high plateau, 157 kms east, you will find Nevado de Tres Cruces National Park, an important moore with the lagoons of Negro Francisco and Santa Rosa. 245 away there is also Ojos del Salado volcano.
