 

Tierra Atacama is a boutique hotel located a few steps away from San Pedro de Atacama, in Chile's Big North. It was built where an old cattle corral existed centuries ago and where herders bringing cattle from Argentina to the port of Antofagasta would stop for water and alfalfa during their journey.
The adobe walls surrounding the property were part of the original Corral and are today preserved as a monument to the history of the place.Â

Rooms
All rooms in Tierra Atacama have private terraces overlookin Licancabur volcano. Of the 32 rooms, 30 are designed for two people either in separate beds or together. There are also two Family Suites with three bedrooms each: one master bedroom with a private terrace and bathroom, and two smaller rooms for two people each. All rooms are equipped with wireless internet connections, central heating, safe, hairdrier and telephone.

By car
Duration: 6 to 8 hours - Difficulty level: Easy. The tour departs from the hotel going to Miscanti and Miñiques altiplanic lagoons, located at 4200 mts msl. This is the perfect scenario to stop for some minutes and admire the altiplanic landscape, with it mountains, and contrasts of extraordinary colours. This trip includes lunch at a simple local restaurant in the town of Socaire, a small help to the local community. Duration: 6 to 8 hours - Difficulty Level: Easy. The tour starts heading east, allowing you to take a close look at the local volcanoes, such as Licancabur. You will then keep on ascending until reaching the highest point of the excursion (4700 msl), finding observation spots from where you will see birds, moors, and salt flats. In the end of the paved road you will find the majestic rock formations Monjes de la Pacana, where the dirt road taking you to Tara stars, an unexpected salt flat with scenic beauty. Lunch. Duration: 7 hours - Difficulty Level: Easy (with acclimatization). At 4300 mts msl you will find Tatio Geysers, an amazing geothermal field which is closely related to the geothermal activity in the area. 12 mt steam columns rise every day, all of which come from underground boiling water pools. You will have breakfast after sunrise. On the way back you will have the chance to observe fauna species like vicunas, foxes, viscachas, and rheas. After stopping at the town of Machuca, you will go back to the hotel at midday. Duration: 5 to 6 hours - Difficulty Level: Easy. The village of Machuca is located on the north side of San Pedro de Atacama, at 4000 mts, in a landscape filled with llamas and several bird species, with a traditional architecture in rock and adobe, both in its houses and churches. On the way, you will also pass by an area rich in cacti. Duration: 3 hours - Difficulty Level: Easy. This trip is a unique experience in a dry environment. Hidden in a gully with a green bottom, Puritama river awaits you with 8 wells and natural pools of thermal water at 33ºC at 3500 msl. After a pleasant bath you will go back to the hotel by vehicle. Duration: 3 hours - Difficulty Level: Easy. Come and enjoy the surreal landscape of Moon Valley (2500 mts msl), located in Cordillera de la Sal, southwest of San Pedro de Atacama. Here you will find amazing but yet beautiful rock formations created by the erosion of the rivers, wind, rain, and extreme temperatures. Walking amongst these unique places is an unforgettable experience. Duration: 4,5 hours - Difficulty Level: Easy. The trip starts heading south, stopping in the town of Toconao after 30 minutes, visiting the local main square, church, and craft market. The trip continues then to one of the sectors in Los Flamencos National Reserve, located in Atacama Salt Flat. You will have the chance to observe some flamingoes in their natural habitat, and in the afternoon you will witness one of the most marvelous spectales in Chile: the sunset in Atacama Salt Flat.
Treks
Duration: 2,5 to 3,5 hours - Difficulty level: Easy. This excursion can be carried out in the morning or in the afternoon depending on your preference. You will depart from the hotel by vehicle taking the old road that used to connect San Pedro and Calama, until crossing a tunnel, from where you will enjoy amazing views of the volcanoes in the area. You will continue on foot until 2600 mts, to then descend until the biggest dunes in Valle de la Muerte, without a doubt, an amazing experience. Duration: 1,5 hours to 2,5 hours + 40 minutes by car - Difficulty level: Easy. This excursion can be carried out in the morning or in the afternoon depending on your preference. You will depart from the hotel by vehicle, heading for Kari viewpoint, located at 2550 mts msl. You will witness a strange phenomenon: the water, wind, and temperature created this unique type of basin. You will walk amongs dry clay and gypsum rivers, and rambling passages, discovering unique shapes and views in every corner.Return to the hotel by vehicle. Duration: 2,5 to 3,5 horas - Difficulty Level: Medium. You will depart from the hotel by vehicle heading for Quebrada del Diablo, located in Cordillera de la Sal (The Salt Range). You will walk in flat lands, on the bank of a dry river with gypsum formations. Then, the gradual ascent starts , ending in a viewpoint overlooking the surrounding volcanoes. You will then continue through an old road used by ancient caravans. There you will see petroglyphs that reflect the ancient comercial activity in the area. The trek ends with a view of a historical places called Vilama. Return to the hotel by vehicle. Duration: 2 to 3 hour trek + 1 hour car ride - Difficulty level: Medium. You will leave the hotel heading northeast. Puritama and Purifica rivers join in Guatin Valley, from where you will start walking. In this places you will find amazing cacti called "cardones" and a varied vegetation, along with waterfalls and rock formations that make this trek a very attractive adventure. Duration: 2,5 to 3,5 hour trek + 1 hour by car - Difficulty level: Medium. It is recommendable to do go on this excursion in the morning, due to the high temperatures after noon. You will walk along the river across GuatÃn stream, which is covered with ignimbrite rocks, a proof of an ancient volcanic activity. You will also pass by Cortaderias (fox tails), plants that grow near rivers. You will also see several bird species before relaxing in the thermal springs of Puritama. This place is a great choice to prepare volcanoes ascents. You will return to the hotel by vehicle. Duración: 7 a 9 horas (5 a 7 horas sólo de caminata). Grado de dificultad: Medio +. Esta caminata es ideal para una buena aclimatación con el fin de realizar alguna ascensión a los volcanes de la zona. La caminata comienza a 4.000 m.s.n.m. y sigue el lecho del RÃo Peñaliri a una altura promedio de 3.600 mts., permitiendo ver llamas y aves caracterÃsticos del altiplano. Almorzarán en el poblado abandonado de Peñaliri, antes de seguir por las terrazas abandonadas de esta quebrada, observando cactáceas y el encuentro de la Cordillera de la Sal en su último tramo. La caminata concluye en RÃo Grande, pueblo donde se pueden ver algunos cultivos como ajos, los tÃpicos choclos del altiplano y otros vegetales. Duración: 4 hrs. de caminata + 2 hrs. de auto - Nivel de dificultad: Fácil +. Viajarán durante 1 hora rumbo al oeste, por la carretera que conduce a Calama. Al llegar a 3.400 m.s.n.m. tomarán un desvÃo que los conducirá, a través de la Cordillera de Domeyko, al inicio de esta caminata (3.000 m.s.n.m. aprox.), cercano al rÃo Salado, al valle de Matancilla y a los petroglifos de Hierbas Buenas. El comienzo de esta caminata serpentea por una pequeña quebrada para luego abrirse a grandes formaciones rocosas tapizadas de petroglifos. Siguiendo lechos de rÃos secos, flanqueados por montañas y admirando vistas desde diversos miradores con más petroglifos y estancias de pastores, finalizarán, luego de un tranquilo ascenso-descenso, en el famoso valle de Matancilla, muy conocido también como valle del Arcoiris. Allà almorzarán para luego retornar al hotel.

Paseos en bicicletas
Duración: 2,5 a 3,5 horas - Grado de dificultad: Medio +. Puede realizarse en la mañana o en la tarde. Saldrán en bicicleta desde el hotel, a 2.400 m.s.n.m aprox., hacia el norte de San Pedro, siguiendo el transcurso norte del RÃo homónimo. El paisaje es una mezcla entre la Cordillera de la Sal y el oasis circundante. Luego de cruzar el rÃo, llegarán a la Quebrada del Diablo, que los asombrará con su particular belleza y el recorrido de este sinuoso rÃo seco con grandes paredes arcillosas. Irán por un camino arenoso a veces, en un ascenso suave pero constante, hasta llegar a la salida laberÃntica de esta cordillera donde contrastaremos con el verde del oasis que se ha ido expandiendo con los cultivos de Catarpe. El camino de regreso es siguiendo el camino natural del RÃo San Pedro que está canalizado. Duración: 4 horas aprox (2 horas de bicicleta) - Grado de dificultad: Medio. Esta excursión es recomendable realizarla por la mañana, debido al intenso sol del mediodÃa y a lo ventoso de la tarde. Partirán del hotel en bicicleta hacia el sur, adentrándose por el oasis hasta el borde del Salar de Atacama a una altura promedio de 2300 m.s.n.m. En estas lagunas la concentración salina es tal que el baño resulta una experiencia comparable con la de bañarse en el Mar Muerto, es decir, los cuerpos flotan asombrosamente. Luego del baño regresarán en vehÃculo al hotel. Duración: 2 a 3,5 horas - Grado de dificultad: DifÃcil. Esta excursión puede realizarse tanto en la mañana como en la tarde. Partirán del hotel por carretera hacia el noroeste para empalmar con la Cordillera de la Sal y la espectacular vista de los volcanes de los Andes. Continuarán en las alturas contemplando las formaciones del Valle de la Muerte desde arriba, para luego descender por caminos antiguos hasta llegar al oasis de San Pedro. Esta excursión tiene ascensos y descensos con fuertes pendientes y los caminos dan un buen recorrido de categorÃa mountain bike. Duración: 1,5 a 2,5 horas - Grado de dificultad: Fácil. Esta excursión puede realizarse tanto en la mañana como en la tarde. Partirán del hotel en bicicleta para visitar algunos de los Ayllus más caracterÃsticos del oasis de San Pedro de Atacama, a 2400 m.s.n.m. Luego de apreciar la fisonomÃa de chacras, parcelas y la caracterÃstica arquitectura de adobe de la zona, regresarán al hotel. Es una muy buena forma de aclimatar el primer dÃa de estadÃa en San Pedro de Atacama. Escalada a Volcanes
Duración: 5 a 7 horas (Ascenso de 1 a 2,5 hrs. promedio, descenso 1 hr. + 2,5 hrs. vehÃculo) - Grado de dificultad: DifÃcil. Saldrán desde 2.400 m.s.n.m aprox. Luego de 1 hora y 30 minutos en vehÃculo, llegarán a una altura de 5.000 m.s.n.m aprox. donde comenzará el ascenso a la cumbre de 5.600 m.s.n.m. aprox. Una vez allà disfrutarán de la vista del lado boliviano con la hermosa Laguna Blanca al este y la zona del Salar de Atacama al oeste. Comenzarán el descenso seguro y gradual por la misma ruta del ascenso hasta el encuentro del vehÃculo que los traerá de regreso al hotel. Esta excursión requiere de aclimatación y algunas caminatas previas. Es recomendable para estadÃas de entre 5 y 7 dÃas, sujeto a evaluación fÃsica del pasajero, y condiciones climáticas adecuadas para el desarrollo de la actividad.

Cabalgatas
Tendrán disponible una selección de cabalgatas con caballos de la zona de Atacama, con monturas de estilo chileno. Dentro del sitio del hotel hay un lugar para conocer y montar los caballos, luego de haberse puesto polainas y casco. De aquà partirán con el guÃa a descubrir los paisajes desérticos de la Cordillera de la Sal o del oasis. Dependiendo de la experiencia y deseo de los participantes, el viaje puede durar entre 2 y 5 horas.

Cultura, Flora y Fauna
Existen varios lugares donde podremos observar aves en esta zona como: Quebrada de Guatin, Salar de Atacama, poblado de Machuca, Lagunas Tara, RÃo Putana. Podrán encontrar una amplia variedad de especies de aves, acorde al tipo de terreno y vegetación. Como ejemplo, en los salares se encuentran Flamencos Chilenos, Andinos y de James, asà como el CaitÃ, Chorlo de la Puna y Playeros. En los humedales altiplánicos hay guayatas, taguas y variedades de patos. Factores como ciclos migratorios, condición alimenticia, horario, temperatura, altura, etc. son determinantes para el avistamiento de estas especies. El Altiplano corresponde a una gigantesca meseta ubicada sobre los 4000 metros de altitud. Es un ambiente de praderas atravesadas por profundas quebradas, salpicadas de blancos salares y de masas de lavas provenientes de antiguas erupciones volcánicas. El clima presenta fuertes fluctuaciones de temperatura, las lluvias son escasas y la atmósfera a esta altura es transparente y luminosa. Aquà la naturaleza propone algo diferente que los asombrará con especies adaptadas al rigor de condiciones climáticas extremas. Duración: 3 a 4 horas - Grado de dificultad: Fácil. Es importante tener una idea general de lo que ha ocurrido en esta zona a través de la historia de su opcupación. El tiempo pasado toma especial importancia para entender la cultura y la idiosincrasia de un pueblo. La visita al museo los ayudará a entender este proceso, también en terreno podrán descubrir elementos aún existentes de esta cultura. Duración: 3 a 4 horas - Grado de dificultad: Fácil. El arte rupestre tiene muchas expresiones y el hombre ha tratado de grabar experiencias, elementos comunes, sÃmbolos y signos. La descripción y el entendimiento de ellos a través de una ciencia, que es la arqueologÃa, posibilitan entender al ser humano. Petroglifo: inscripción o grabado en la piedra, fundamentalmente hecho a mano a través de un elemento sólido. Estos lugares, que ahora parecen estar en el medio de la nada, transportan a un pasado donde las caravanas descansaban y dejaban sus mensajes, de los cuales existen varias teorÃas.
