Natural Heritage
Flora
The flora in the park is distributed in 137 endemic and 213 native species. With a 64.32 of endemism, this is one of the parks with highest endemism rates in the world.
Among the birds in the island you will find Juan Fernández Firecrown (Sephanoides fernandensis), the only insular endemic hummingbird in the world. One of its most remarkable features is its marked sexual dimorphism, and its beautiful iridescent colors, both in males and females. Sadly, this species is in danger, with a population of only 1000 specimens.
Fauna
The only endemic mammal is Juan Fernández Furr Seal (Arctocephalus philippi), with 80.000 specimens in the archipiélago. During the XVIII and XIX centuries, indiscriminate hunting almost made the species disappear, but today it is especially protected by CONAF.
