Life in the Chilean Flowering Desert
Wednesday, 19 June 2013 00:40
In 1831 the French naturalist Claudio Gay headed north to see the flowering desert himself. Nevertheless, it was impossible due to the drought that took place that year. Flowering Desert in Chile
Wednesday, 19 June 2013 00:40
On September 8th, 2011, Llanos de Challe National Park, located 45 km north of Huasco, will officially launch the season 2011 of the famous flowering desert. It is a phenomenon that occurs in Atacama Desert between September and November, when occassional precipitations fall causing many latent seeds and roots to bloom. These are accompanied by the proliferation of insects and some small lizards. The flowering desert reaches its maximum splendour between Vallenar and the north of Copiapó. The tours we offer in GoChile include visits to Llanos de Challe National Park, and city tours to towns like Carrizal Bajo and Huasco. They mix wildlife observation with visits to wetlands and oasis where Chile's best olive oil is made.
