Is located 50 meters above sea level and 110 km from Arica towards the South during the prehispanic era, the residence of the Cacique (chief) of the “Altos de Arica” (Arican highlands), governed over Socoroma, Putre, Livilcar, Ticnamar and other towns. Due to the location, at the top of the Vitor River, the waters are pure and the terrain is fertile, making this place excellent for growing avocados, guavas, quince, citrus fruits and grapes, which are the main ingredient in the making of the traditional “Pintatani Wine”. It's name coming from “Suri”, a name used by the Aymaras for the nandu, a species of Chilean Ostrich that lives in this zone and that can be seen during this tour. The salt flat, with its large surface area, appears majestic. Its saline deposits creating an intense white which strongly contrasts with the blue waters of the lagoons. Added to this is the permanent habitation of a large population of 3 of the 6 species of flamengos in the world. These salt flats are the place where the flamengos reproduce, as well as the habitat of a considerable number of other wildlife species. The regular encounter with flamengos feeding and fluttering above the lagoons together with a number of groups of Vicunas and Suris en the fields is very attractive. The presence of the Hot Spring pools (Polloquere Springs) is inviting for recreation and relaxation. Located 3,500 meters a.s.l., with 1,205 inhabitants. This place was established as a town in 1580 by Spanish settlers in charge of traffic between Potosi and Arica. Government houses, town hall, the church parish house and the church built in 1670 are located around the Plaza de Armas (center square). The main tourist attractions are the Surire Salt Flats, the Lauca National Park, the Jurasi Hot Springs, the snow covered mountains of Tarapaca and the Vicuna National Reserve. The Vilakaure geoglyphs, that show the importance of the pre hispanic cultures, are just 8 km away.
