DESCRIPTION

San Pedro de Atacama is a small town with adobe constructions, built by the first Spanish settlers in the region, just after the year 1550. To this day they have maintained the architecture and spacial organization typical of that time period, entirely in adobe. The "damero", with symmetric design and a main square, in front of the Town Hall, is a typical Spanish construction where civil activity takes place. This building preserves the typical institutional arches, which were recently reconstructed. To one side of the plaza there is a century old church with thick clay walls and ceilings made out of cactus trunks, covered with clay. It is the heart of the oasis nourished by the San Pedro and Vilama rivers that flow through deep ravines from the foothills of the Andes Mountain Chain no more than 40 km (25 mi) away.

Itinerary

Day 1: Calama Airport - San Pedro de Atacama

Arrival and shuttle to San Pedro de Atacama from the airport or Calama Bus Terminal

Day 2: Valle de la Luna y Valle de la Muerte

Departure from the Hotel 15:00 hrs. approximately; Moon Valley is located 19 km away from San Pedro, in the Cordillera de la Sal. Named Sanctuary of Nature and Natural Monument, protected for the uniqueness of its beauty. It is formed by a depression surrounded by small hills with impressive sharped ridges. The tour is an imaginary trip to a place that does not belong here, but to other planets.
That is how we can find the Dinosaurs and Death Valley, where we can get an overwhelming panoramic view. Next, we go to the Moon Valley, where we will find geological formations caused by successive folding of the earth's crust. By sunset a dazzling artist's palette of gold and reds that touches our human sensitivity.

Day 3: Sala de Atacama - Lagunas Altiplánicas - Toconao

Departure from the Hotel 09:00 hrs approximately; Atacama, the biggest salt flat in Chile, boasts one of the most important flamingo reserves (Flamingo National Reserve). We take a path to get closer to the Chaxa lagoon in order to identify the different types of birds. Miscanti and Miñique, located at 4.220 mts. are managed by the Socaire community and it is also part of the National Reserve. The eruption of the Miñiques volcano 1 million years ago caused the damming of the water that used to flow to the salt flat, giving origin to these blue water and white shores lagoons. On our way back, Socaire, a pre-Columbian village, nowadays well considered by the typical Atacama food.

Day 4. Geysers del Tatio - Calama Airport

Early departure from hotel to visit the Tatio Geysers (04:30 hrs AM) , geothermal center active only in the morning. We will have breakfast, surrounded by an overwhelming landscape, after such beautiful show. Shuttle back to Calama’s Airport.

On our way back, we will enjoy the magnificent Andes range, whose summits seem to be close to our hands.On the way, we find Machuca , a little sheperds settlement. The village is decorated by adobe houses of wild grass roof. A vivid green bofedal gives a special charm to the scenery.

Valle de la Luna y Valle de la Muerte
