Description

Our lodge is located on a plain known as the Ayllu de Larache, once inhabited by an ancient Atacameño community. We have respected the original layout of the land and restored and maintained some of the buildings.

Opened in 1998, our lodge is situated on 17 hectares (42 acres) of grounds just a few minutes’ walk from the town of San Pedro de Atacama. In the area surrounding the lodge, we have maintained the ancient pathways and buildings which form a labyrinth that invites exploration.

There are 50 rooms housed in three long buildings, positioned to form a central square planted with large trees for ample shade. On the fourth side of the square is the building which houses the lodge’s public spaces. The views from the lodge’s broad terraces enable you to enjoy Atacama’s vast chain of volcanic mountains.

 

Between the Pacific and the Andes mountains lies Atacama, a vast and mysterious stretch of land. The desert and oasis have seen moments of stillness and change for the pre Colombian Andean cultures of South America. All that is left from their past remains now as landmarks throughout the territory; and the present-day integration of other cultures allows the traditions to carry on and bring life to the small towns.

The visitors of Explora can participate in a variety of possible explorations, which have been carefully developed. Each day you can choose among 8 different explorations. They have been selected according to climatic conditions, the visitors taste, their duration, and difficulty. The explorations in Explora Atacama will allow you to discover the multiple facets of this territory; its geography, history, fauna, geology and the opportunity to see volcanoes from up close and visit ancient villages.

 

The itinerary is based on the requests of those that contract the excursions. For this reason, Explora Atacama has designed 2 types of programs:

Included Excursions

Part of the distinguished stamp of the Explora Hotels is that the passengers, called "Explorers", are able to incorporate themselves into the various possibilities of explorations that have been designed, also taking into consideration a gradual acclimation to the altitude. The explorations in Atacama will allow you to discover the multiple facets of the land, geography, history, fauna, and geology. You will see volcanoes up close and visit ancient villages.

 

Throughout your stay, you will feel challenged to discover more and perhaps reach even higher, although there is no competition in Explore. The weather is pleasant year round and there are not many limits as far as participating in excursions every day. You will be able to choose among a variety of explorations offered each day. We highlight the following journeys as an example: Valley of the Moon

 

Total Length of Time: Half day. Hiking 2.5 to 3 hours, 8.9 km.
Itinerary: Leaving the hotel in the van (35 mins) to Valle de la Luna. Thence the hike begins, that crosses dunes, creeks and plains, from where we can appreciate the inhospitable landscapes of the Cordillera de la Sal. The highest point is 2,521 meters above sea level, near the end of the hike.
Level: Easy.

Total Length of Time: Half day, 3.5 Hrs. 30 minutes hike.
Itinerary: Leaving in the van from Larache Hotel to the south, towards the town of Toconao, located about 38 km. from San Pedro de Atacama. Once in Toconao we visit the central park, the church and the bell tower, historical symbol of the town. After 25 minutes in Toconao we head southwest for about 20 minutes to the Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos, also called Laguna Chaxa where we visit the salt flat and enjoy some bird watching until dusk. Return in the Explora van.
Level: Easy.

Total Length of Time: Full day
Length of Trip: 200 km.
Itinerary: Leaving in the van from Larache Hotel (2.5 hrs) crossing the plateau towards colorful town of Caspana (3,322 masl), with a detour to the geysers of the Tatio. Along the road some of the highlands fauna can be seen. Walk visiting agricultural fields. Lunch in town. The trip continues visiting the old Pukará de Lasana, the church of Chiu-Chiu until arriving at the airport of Calama.
Level: Very easy.

Total Length of the Time: 2 full days.
Altitude gain: 1.350 m approx depending on the snow.
Itinerary: Leaving in the van from Larache Hotel and crossing the border with Bolivia. Base camp at 4,633 masl. Hike towards Laguna Verde in the afternoon. Ascent at dawn with headlamps passing through Incas ruins. Arrival at the summit after 7 to 8 hours, with views of the crater and access to the highest lagoon of the world. Demanding descent of 3 to 4 hours.
Level: Demanding.
Others: Previous notice 60 days in advance. Visa to enter Bolivia.

The program includes

• Shuttle roundtrip between the local airport and the Explora destination. The shuttle schedule is subject to change without previous warning. Please ask on the schedule of the shuttle of each Explora destination.
• Accommodations.
• Complete board. 3 daily meals according to the menu. Bar.
• Daily explorations with bilingual guides and equipment; boats, horses, vehicles and bicycles (groups of 10 people by guide maximum). Equipment varies according to each destination.
• Transfers in van, boat, or horse and picnics.

Notes

• The guestroom check in begins from 17:00 hours (5:00 pm) and can be earlier, depending on the availability of the guestrooms.
• We recommend that you arrive to the hotel early in the morning. Explora will take care of your luggage until you enter your room.
• When you depart from the Hotel, we recommend that you make your flight reservations after 18:00 hours (6:00 pm), in order to take advantage of the whole day in explorations.
• The rates are per person, according to the American dollar.
• The rates do not include taxes nor do they include tips.
• Rates and programs are subject to change without prior notice.
• Children less than 2 years of age sharing a guestroom with both parents are free of charge.
• Consult value for extra bed (in according room type) for children up to 12 years.
• Consult by special rate (in according room type) for persons from 13 to 18 years.
• The guestrooms are acclimatized which make air conditioning unnecessary. The guestrooms do not provide television or cable.
• Ask about other excursions and extra days of accommodation.
