Chile : Guide to National Parks : Recommendations

Recommendations for the Visitor

To make your visit a pleasant one, it is required that you respect some simple rules in order to preserve your integrity and that of nature.

Let someone know about your visit to the Protected Wildlife Areas, and tell the internal regulation of that area when you enter.  In the case of ascensions and excursions into mountains, you must fill out a registration card provided by the administration headquarters or the park warden's office.

You must always bring documents for identification such as your passport or other credentials.

If you drive a vehicle, use a reasonable speed and drive with caution, respecting the rules of traffic.

Only camp in the permitted sites in accordance with the instructions found in each area.

Bonfires and the use of fire to cook is restricted to the places authorized for such purposes.

If you plan to enter a zone of restricted use and especially in the zones identified as high risk, ask for authorization at the Administration of the area, and consult the park warden or professional guides credited by Conaf.

When making ascensions to volcanoes or hills, you must go with a credited guide.

Always remember that water is a precious resource, and do not do anything to contaminate it.

To do sport fishing, you need proper permits, and you must strictly respect the governing rules of this activity.

In order to enjoy your visit more, try not to smoke in these areas; but if you do smoke remember to thoroughly put out the matches and cigarette butts.

Take good care of the native flora and fauna wherever you find them.

Remember that garbage contaminates and to help solve this problem:

- Use paper bags.  Plastic is not biodegradable.

- Try to use food that is not packaged in plastic containers.  Otherwise, deposit the packaging in the trash receptacles specifically for plastic containers, and do the same for glass and metal containers.

- For biodegradable trash (remains of food, paper, etc.) bury them in the ground at least 50 cm from the surface.

- Always try to use those products which do not harm the environment such as aerosol that does NOT damage the ozone layer, pump sprays, glycerine soap, biodegradable detergents, etc.

- Remember that a battery thrown onto the ground contaminates at least a meter radius around.  Use only appropriate trash receptacles.

For whatever problem, question, or suggestion, consult the park wardens that, with their experience, can find solutions for situations that the visitor needs.
