Itinerary

Day 1.
Departure in the morning from Puerto Montt, with S.I.B services, to visit the old Pacific port on the island of Chiloe. Ancud offers visitors the first glimpse at this world and its legend. Once we have crossed the Chacao Channel we will arrive to the island of Chiloe and the city of Ancud. Here we will visit the museum and discover part of the island's history. After lunch we will head to the San Antonio fort and Arena Gruesa Beach (Thick Sand Beach). Afterwards, we will follow a path that will take us to the Ahui Fort on the extreme western side of the Ancud Bay, near the Corona Lighthouse. There will be free time to return by Mar Brava, a trail that runs a few kilometers along the beaches of the Pacific Ocean. On our return to Ancud, we will ascend the Huaihuén Hill, and from here enjoy a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean, the city of Ancud, the Pudeto River, and the continent itself. Arrival to the Inn in Ancud. Accommodations.

Day 2.
Breakfast in the Inn. Departure in the morning to begin our full day excursion exploring the famous churches of Chiloé. These national monuments were declared a World Heritage by UNESCO and they are the only ones built from wood. These churches are also found in the small towns throughout the island, where the traditional rural lifestyle is maintained. We begin with a visit to the church of Dalcahue, 38 miles (60 km) south of Ancud. Our journey continues on to visit the churches of Achao on Quinchao Island. These include Castro church, 50 miles (80 km) from Ancud; Nercon Church, 53 miles (85 km), Chonchi church, 64 miles (103 km) and Vilupulli Church, 62 miles (100 km). They are all located south of Ancud. Lunch en route (optional). Return to the hotel in Ancud. Accommodations.

Day 3.
Breakfast in the hotel. We will return to Puerto Montt at a time later specified and drop off passengers at their hotels.

Churche of Dalcahue
The church is, without a doubt, the most important building of the urban colonial Hispanic-American nucleus. This was made important and was encouraged by the civil authorities in the directives and standards, forming the foundation of each new population. In the Archipelago of Chiloé, there are about 60 churches that correspond to the typology which is called Chilota School of Religious Wooden Architecture. This character of school comes from the construction of a type of building that over time has established an "archetype" in the cultural plane. The basic elements of this type are: the platform, the horizontal volume, the frontal tower, the arch, and the system of construction. These defining elements have been constantly maintained over time. This typology of religious architecture is the most eminent manifestation of wooden architecture in the archipelago, whose essential characteristics appear also in the urban, rural, and seaside dwellings, etc.

Churches of San Francisco of Castro

Of these 60, only 14 apply for Patrimonio de la Humanidad (The Wealth of Humanity). The selection is not arbitrary. In the universe of the traditional Chilota Church, it´s clear that there are specifications that have been constituted in models, generating "series" that are inspired by characteristics.

By merit of the existence of these models, it is possible to identify, for example, varying locals of the typology that develop determining characteristics of church models. (Hernan Barrientos)
