Chile : Hot Springs Guide : Geometricas Hot Springs

Geometricas Hot Springs

Geometricas Hot Spring

Immersed in the beauty and majesty of the Villarrica National Park, near Coñaripe, the Geométricas Hot Springs are the new and original choice for thermal tourism in Chile.

These Hot Springs are located next to the Aihué Inlet and the easiest way to get there is to leave from Villarrica, passing by Lican Ray until you arrive to Coñaripe. There is a transfer service that leaves Coñaripe and takes you to the hot springs along the route that leads to the Villarrica National Park.

The Geométricas Hot Springs, or Cajón Negro, as they used to be called, are the result of an ambitious project carried out by architect, Germán del Sol. He strived to create a harmonic balance between nature and geometry by constructing the hot springs from mainly wood and raw materials.

These hot springs are characterized by an abundant number of thermal fountains, around 60 in all. They spring from the Aihué ravine at temperatures of 176°F (80°C). Another unique characteristic that adds even more attraction to this place is the wooden footbridge that passes through the center and allows you to look around the ravine and choose your favorite pool in which to bathe. Under the footbridge, which is about 1,476 ft. long (450 m), the thermal waters flow into the pools through a wooden channel that directs the water.

The Villarrica National Park alone deserves a visit. Its main and most significant attraction is the Villarrica Volcano itself, a towering 9,338 ft. (2,847 m) above sea level. Despite the fact that the Villarrica is one of the most active volcanoes in South America, there is a large ski center nestled on its slopes and climbing excursions that guide you to the volcano's peak where you can see the lava that churns within, live and in color. The park is rich in flora and fauna, sprawled over a surface area of 151,000 acres (63,000 hectares). Species of trees that stand out are the Evergreen Beech, Long-leaf Maniu, and the Coigüe. Some of the wildlife that inhabits the area include pumas, gray fox, red fox, mountain goats, coupu (kind of beaver), skunks and mountain monkeys that regardless of the name are one of three species of marsupials that live in Chile.

You can also go hiking, mountain climbing, fishing, observe nature, shoot photos, and go horseback riding in the park's interior.

Other nearby vacation spots include Pucón and Lican Ray, famous for their beaches along the Villarrica Lake.

When to go
Year round. There is no central heating in the winter and it gets a little cold if snow falls.
How to get there
From Villarrica to the hot springs 56 miles (90 km). From Pucón, 32 miles (52 km).
