With these tips in mind, your road trip during the Fiestas Patrias 2025 will be a safe, comfortable, and memorable experience.

The Fiestas Patrias in Chile are just around the corner, offering the perfect chance to enjoy an unforgettable roadtrip. With holidays starting on Thursday, September 18, this 2025 brings a four-day long weekend, ideal for traveling across the country from north to south. Whether you want to immerse yourself in the landscapes of the Atacama Desert, relax in La Serena and the Elqui Valley, or fall under the southern charm of places like Valdivia or Puerto Varas, a road adventure lets you connect with the true essence of Chile. ¡Tikitikiti!

But before you turn the key, preparation is key to keeping the experience as safe as it is exciting. Here are five tips you can’t miss for a smooth journey.

1. Check that your car is in perfect condition

Before hitting the road, make sure your vehicle is in top shape. During the Fiestas Patrias, congested highways increase the risk of unexpected incidents. Inspect the battery, windshield wipers (especially if you’re heading to rainy areas), the tire pressure and wear, as well as the brake system and ignition. A complete checkup can save you from unpleasant surprises.

2. If you drink during Fiestas Patrias, don’t drive

Chilean celebrations mean barbecues, empanadas, wine, and the classic terremoto cocktail. But if you choose to drink, don’t get behind the wheel. Safety comes first: designate a driver who hasn’t consumed alcohol or share the driving with someone sober. That way, everyone enjoys a safe and happy return.

3. Take advantage of the “peaje a luca” and follow restrictions

The popular “peaje a luca” (toll for a thousand pesos) is a benefit for light vehicles aimed at easing traffic. These discounts will operate:

  • Saturday 13, from 07:00 to 09:00, on Route 68 (Lo Prado and Zapata) and Route 5 North (Las Vegas).

  • Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18, same time, on Route 5 South (Angostura), Route 68, and Route 5 North.

For trucks with two or more axles, there will be a 50% nighttime toll discount between 00:00 and 07:00 on September 13, 17, and 18.

Truck restrictions:

  • Wednesday 17 (12:00–19:00) and Thursday 18 (09:00–15:00) on Route 68 (Vespucio–Algarrobo), Route 5 South (Calera de Tango–Pelequén), and Route 5 North (Lo Pinto–Llay Llay).

Return to Santiago:

  • Saturday 20 (07:00–13:00) and Sunday 21 (07:00–10:00) on Route 68, Route 5 South, and Route 5 North.

  • Trucks: 50% nighttime discount between 00:00 and 07:00 on September 20 and 21.

  • Sunday 21, cargo restrictions from 12:00 to 19:00 on Route 68 and Route 5 North.

4. Plan according to peak congestion times

Traffic during these dates is intense: it’s estimated that over one million vehicles will leave the Metropolitan Region. Plan your departure and return to avoid the worst traffic jams.

  • Busiest departure times: Friday 12, Saturday 13 (10:00–14:00), Wednesday 17 (15:00–20:00), and Thursday 18 (10:00–14:00).

  • Peak return times: Saturday 20 (14:00–20:00) and Sunday 21 (12:00–22:00).

5. Leave early or delay your return

Sunday, September 21 will be the most challenging day to drive back to Santiago, with heavy traffic on major routes. If possible, head back earlier on Saturday 20 or depart early on the 21st. Another option is to return on Monday 22, when highways will be much clearer.
