Volcanoes, dreamlike lakes, and ancient forests come together in Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park — a place to experience unique adventures in the heart of Chile’s wild southern region.
There are places that seem created to amaze; landscapes where nature is revealed without filters, in all its strength and beauty. Such is the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, the oldest in Chile, a land of mountains, lakes, and volcanoes that invites you to live unforgettable adventures in the heart of the Los Lagos Region. It was established on August 17, 1926, and today protects more than 253 thousand hectares of valuable ecosystems, mostly within the Province of Llanquihue and partly in the Province of Osorno.
The park is located in the heart of the Andes Mountain Range, in an area shaped over thousands of years by volcanism, glaciers, and tectonic movements. Because of this, its geography offers scenery that looks like works of art: wild, ever-changing, and incredibly captivating. It is no coincidence that it is part of the Temperate Rainforests of the Southern Andes Biosphere Reserve, a designation that acknowledges its global ecological importance.
How to get there and move around the park
Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park is located 72 kilometers east of Puerto Montt. The main access is through International Route 225, which connects Puerto Varas with Ensenada and Petrohué, continuing to Peulla, where you cross Lake Todos los Santos toward Bariloche, Argentina.
If you don’t have your own vehicle, you can reach different areas by public transportation, with companies traveling to Ensenada, the Petrohué Falls, and the town of Peulla, some combining bus and catamaran trips.
Main attractions
The Petrohué Falls are, without a doubt, one of the main reasons that thousands of visitors come every year. Here, the turquoise waters of the Petrohué River slide and crash over dark rocks of volcanic origin, creating a visual and sound spectacle that remains etched in memory.
Very close by, Lake Todos los Santos impresses with its emerald-green color, a tone that becomes more intense on sunny days thanks to the mineral sediments carried by mountain rivers. From its shores, you can take boat trips that offer a different view of the park and even allow you to continue traveling into Argentine territory.
Looking toward the horizon, it is impossible not to stop before the elegance of Osorno Volcano, a perfect cone covered in snow dominating the park’s iconic scenery. You can reach its viewpoints, enjoy its ski resort, or venture into mountaineering and trekking routes. In winter, road conditions may vary due to snow, so it is recommended to check conditions before attempting the ascent.
Flora and fauna of Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park
The park is also a refuge for unique biodiversity. Most of the land is covered by evergreen forest, with coigüe, canelo, patagua, and pitra trees forming a seemingly endless green mantle. At higher elevations, between 800 and 1,000 meters, you can find the alerce, a millenary tree of slow growth and enormous biological and cultural value. Walking through these forests is like encountering Chile’s natural history in its most living form.
Wildlife lovers may come across—if luck is on their side—small and large inhabitants of the area: the shy pudú, the elusive guiña wildcat, the agile huillín or river otter, and even the majestic puma. In the skies and tree branches, you may also spot the Magellanic woodpecker, the kingfisher, the eagle, and species as tiny as the green-backed firecrown hummingbird.
Tourist services and amenities
Although the park is adapted for tourism, the experience remains closely tied to nature. There are currently no camping areas open inside the park due to damage caused by the Calbuco Volcano eruption. However, private accommodations can be found nearby, especially in Ensenada, along with hotels, mountain lodges, and rest areas in Petrohué and Ensenada. Here, you also have access to food supplies, fuel, telephone service, and internet, which allows for a safe and comfortable stay.
In case of an emergency, there is a medical post in Petrohué and police services available in both Peulla and Ensenada. Visitor safety is reinforced by the presence of CONAF park rangers, who carry out environmental monitoring, visitor assistance, and heritage protection duties.
Schedules, tickets, and recommendations
The park is open every day, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. To ease entry, it is recommended to purchase your ticket in advance at pasesparques.cl, though you can also buy it directly at the ticket office. If your goal is to go mountaineering or climb Osorno Volcano, you must register at the CONAF offices located in Petrohué, Ensenada, or Peulla.
The weather can change quickly, especially in winter, when heavy rain may cause road closures toward Lake Todos los Santos. Therefore, it is always advisable to check the weather forecast and road conditions.
Additionally, to navigate on Lake Todos los Santos, an authorization from the Chilean Navy and CONAF is required, and only four-stroke motor boats are permitted.
The adventure in Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park is a journey into the heart of southern Chile, awakening a special connection with nature. Are you ready to discover it?
