From Casablanca to Maule: discover the 5 essential wine routes in Chile to pair landscapes, history, and fine wine in a unique experience.

Few experiences awaken the senses quite like traveling Chile's finest wine routes from mountains to sea, following the green thread of its century-old vineyards. Amid coastal fog, dry summers, and rivers flowing down from the Andes, the country has built a unique identity in the world through its wine valleys, each revealing, one by one, its own nuances of soil, climate, and character.

This journey invites you to discover five of its most emblematic territories, where the glass becomes the best way to read a landscape.

Casablanca Valley

Just an hour from Santiago, Casablanca Valley stands out for its cool climate and proximity to the ocean, conditions that turned it, since the 1980s, into Chile's great white wine laboratory. Here, morning fog and sea breeze moderate the summer heat, allowing a slow, elegant ripening of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, its two flagship varietals, along with a vibrant, high-acidity Pinot Noir that has earned international recognition.

Wineries like Casas del Bosque, Viña Indómita, and Viña Casablanca itself welcome visitors with strolls through the vines, open-air tastings, and cuisine designed for pairing.

Touring this valley is the perfect introduction to the route: a first fresh, luminous sip before heading into the red heart of Chile.

Maipo Valley

Surrounding the capital itself, the historic Maipo Valley is, without exaggeration, the epicenter of Chilean winemaking. Founded in the mid-19th century by wineries such as Concha y Toro, Santa Rita, and Cousiño Macul, this territory of Mediterranean climate and alluvial soils at the foot of the Andes has made Cabernet Sauvignon its reigning varietal, accompanied by notable expressions of Carménère, Merlot, and Syrah.

In the Alto Maipo sector, altitude and Andean proximity produce wines with firm tannins and great aging potential, while toward Maipo Pacífico coastal influence brings freshness. Visiting century-old wineries, some with architecture more than 150 years old, is also a journey through the country's own history.

Colchagua and Cachapoal Valley

Further south, Colchagua Valley has earned the nickname "Chile's Napa" thanks to an irresistible combination of rolling landscapes, spectacular architecture wineries, and some of the country's most award-winning reds. At the heart of the valley, the Apalta microclimate, sheltered by hills that retain heat, produces Chile's most celebrated Carménère, a French-origin varietal rediscovered here after being believed extinct in Europe.

Labels like Clos Apalta, by Lapostolle, or the iconic Purple Angel, by Montes, are the ultimate expression of this unique terroir.

Nearby, Cachapoal Valley, less known but equally promising, shares the spotlight with Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère, with wineries like Altair combining cutting-edge technology with deep respect for terroir.

Together, both valleys make up the Rapel region, the red and touristic heart of Chile's wine route, with the city of Santa Cruz as the ideal base for exploring them.

Curicó Valley

Two hundred kilometers south of Santiago, Curicó Valley stands out for a diversity of varietals rarely seen in a single territory. Here, in 1979, the Torres family arrived, pioneering foreign winemakers to settle in Chile, introducing European winemaking techniques and boosting the region's prestige with iconic wines like Manso de Velasco, a Cabernet Sauvignon from century-old vines.

The valley combines the country's largest Sauvignon Blanc terrain with less common varietals like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Torontel, plus reds such as Malbec and Carignan.

Its diverse terrain, between plains and hillsides near the Andes, makes it an ideal destination for those seeking surprises beyond the most well-known varietals.

Maule Valley

Closing the route to the south, Maule Valley is the guardian of Chilean winemaking memory. It is the country's largest and one of its oldest valleys, with dry-farmed old vines that in some cases exceed a century of life, grown without artificial irrigation thanks to roots that dig several meters deep in search of water.

Here the País grape resurges with strength, the first grape variety to arrive in Chile in colonial times, alongside a characterful Carignan that has found its best international showcase in the VIGNO project, an association of winegrowers committed to these heritage vines.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay round out an offering that combines rural tradition with a new generation of winemakers determined to prove that Chile's oldest vines still have much to tell.
