The San Juan Bautista town is the most important town of the Robinson Crusoe island and has a population that doesn´t exceed 750 inhabitants.
It is located in the northern part of the island, on the famous Cumberland Bay. It is characterized by a modern pier that welcomes visitors who come to know the endemic nature that is on Robinson Crusoe Island.
Most of its streets remain unpaved and has a polyclinic, post offices, local restaurants, a tourist information office and hotels.
The San Juan Bautista town was founded in 1877 by Alfredo Van Rodt. Despite years of standing, its inhabitants have wanted to keep the silence of Robinson Crusoe Island not endowing it with services that could harm the environment.
Gastronomy
The process of colonization on the island was more or less recent, there isn´t an ancient culinary tradition, so the islander cook what they have Within these ingredients are potatoes, onion, golden crab, lobsters, Octopus and fish the Pandora and the vidriola. In times of scarcity, they also eat goat meat.
Among the most famous dishes are lobster pies or the vidriolazo, a sandwich of bread kneaded with vidriola a la plancha and different vegetables.
