ochamó is a town in the Region of the Lakes, located near the city of Puerto Varas. By this city becomes del Río Cochamó, which comes to the valle Cochamo, characterized by its large hills that are used to perform free climbing.
Commonly referred as the "Chilean Yosemite", Cochamó is a district located within the Province of Llanquihue, in Región de Los Lagos. Its capital city is the town of Río Puelo, named after the nearby river, a stream with great waterfalls and surrounded by forest.
Basic Information
Location: Región de Los Lagos, 116 km. from Puerto Montt.
When to go: Year round, but it's best from December to March.
How to arrive: On a private vehicule through Ruta 5 road, take the exit to Puerto Varas and then keep going through the lake's coastal route to the South West, across Ensenada and Ralún. 30 to 40 minutes later you'll finally get to Cochamó. From Puerto Montt there are daily buses going to Cochamó and Cochamó river's bridge. The walkpath starts 8 km upriver from the bridge, through the gravel road. Also, it is possible to reach the walkpath by taking a taxicab from the town.
Attractions: Observations of native species like Condor, Puma, Monito del Monte (Little Mountain Monkey, the smallest marsupial in the world), Pudú and Darwin's Frog. Ancestral larch forests surrounded by great walls of granite, waterfalls and walkpaths.
