In Chile there are 3 subspecies. The Cernícalo, falco sparverius cinnamominus; the northern Cernícalo, falco sparverius peruvianus; and the Juan Fernández Cernícalo, falco sparverius fernandensis.

Distribution: From Atacama to Tierra del Fuego, Juan Fernández Archipelago, and possibly on the San Félix and San Ambrosio islands.
Habitat: Fields , meadows and mountains, from the coast to 3,000 meters.
