A thorny shrub, 1 to 2 meters tall. It has leaves grouped together in rosettes, of varying sizes. The spines are yellowish and grow up to 3 cm. long. It's flowers are solitary with long peduncle that sprouds from each leave rosette. Flowers in September and the fruit, which is edible, is a berry with various seeds.

Distribution: From Curicó to Tierra del Fuego. Generally, it grows on open terrains and at different altitudes. It's a common species.
