We will travel through northern Chile from San Pedro de Atacama to Arica where we'll visit the most wonderful places in the desert such as Isluga and Lauca National Parks, Chungará Lake and the great city of Arica.

Day 1: SAN PEDRO - CALAMA – QUILLAGUA - GEOGLIFOS DE PINTADO – PICA

What you will visit:

  • 1 San Pedro de Atacama

08:00 departure to Pica. On the route, we will pass close to Chuquicamata where we will see some of its huge waste products hills (known as cakes). Then we'll head to the Atacama Desert where we'll be able to see the different colors and shapes. We'll continue to the Pintados Geoglyphs, one of the main archeological heritage in Chile. This beautiful demonstration of rupestrian art,  consisting of more than 400 figures distributed along the hillsides in thematic groups or panels. These Geoglyphs were made on different technics such as the mosaic, scratch and a mixture of both.

 We'll go on until we arrive at Pica Oasis, a little town where we'll visit its 17th Century church and have time to enjoy a rejuvenating swim in the hot springs. Lunch will be on the road.

Day 2: PICA – TIRANA – NITRATED TOWNS –ATACAMA GIANT – COLCHANE.

08:00 am we'll departure to the Matilla Oasis, the village and religious sanctuary of La Tirana. We'll start our route crossing the beautiful Tamarugos forest also known as Pampa del Tamarugal. Next, we'll visit the nitrate offices of Humberstone, today abandoned and Humanity Heritage, where we'll learn about the splendors nitrate past. Some notable attractions in Humberstone are the theatre and church, both built on Oregon pine, and its hotel, which boasts a full-sized swimming pool, built of iron.

We'll leave the town behind to finally arrive at Huara where we'll take a detour to visit Cerro Unita and the Atacama Giant, an 86mt high geoglyphs, one of the largest figures made in pre-Hispanic times that illustrates the figure of a man with a feathered headdress.

We'll continue our ascent through the diverse flora and geological contrast of the desert until we arrive at Colchane, located at 212 km from Iquique and at an altitude of 3.730 meters.

Day 3: COLCHANE - ENQUELGA – R. N. LAS VICUÑAS –SURIRE SALT FLAT– Putre

08:00 am early departure to Isluga village, close to the foot of the active volcano of the same name. The most notable feature of Isluga is its 17 th Century church, considered by many as the most beautiful church on the altiplano. This area of the park is rich in birds and plant species, creating some truly unbeatable landscapes. Visit the village of Enquelga, an ancient and traditional village in which its inhabitants (Aymaras) keep the same lifestyle as they have done for centuries. We'll continue through the Andean villages of Mauque and Arabilla, past small queñua forests and some breathtaking scenery to enter Las Vicuñas National Park and arrive at one of the most stunning areas of the altiplano, the Salar de Surire (Surire Salt Lake). The Salar de Surire shows us a unique panorama, with a number of emerald lagoons and dotted liberally with pink (flamingos) and surrounded by snowcapped volcanoes. The salar is a nature sanctuary where you'll find different animals and birdlife such as ñandu (lesser rhea), flamingos, and tinamous.

Afterwards, we'll relax on Polloquere hot springs.

Box lunch on route. After lunch, we'll explore the salt lake and we'll have time to see its birdlife, especially the flamingos, before continuing our journey, passing the Chilcaya and Guallatire village, close to the foot of an active volcano of the same name. Arrival to Putre, capital of the Province of Parinacota.
Dinner and accommodation at Terrace lodge or Qantati.

Day 4: PUTRE – CHUNGARA LAKE- PARINACOTA – SOCOROMA - ARICA

08:00 After breakfast in the hotel, we'll head towards Lauca National Park, now declared by UNESCO as a World heritage reserve. Lauca National Park is a nature lover’s paradise with an impressive concentration of wildlife in a relatively small area. The park has something for everyone; animals, birds, ancient Andean cultures, handicrafts and some of the most breathtaking scenery of the north of Chile. On arrival at Lake Chungara, at 4,517m altitude, one of the world is highest; we'll find the unique panorama of this emerald colored lake surrounded by snow capped volcanoes reaching easily the 6,000m in height. The area is covered with alpacas, llamas, vicuñas and vizcahas. Settled within this majestic landscape is the tiny Andean village of Parinacota, now declared national monument, still inhabited by its native people (Aymaras) who keep their ancient and traditional ways. Lunch on the road or in Putre before beginning our descent back to sea level. On the way, we visit the Socoroma and Zapahuira villages, El Tambo, The Pukara de Copaquilla, and the Lluta Valley geoglyphs. Arrival at Arica. Transfer to hotel.
