If you want to know the Carretera Austral in a more adventurous way, this circuit is for you. During 7 days you will live different experiences of navigation and rafting along the Baker River until arriving at Caleta Tortel.
Day 1: Balmaceda-Cochrane
What you will visit:
- 1 Cochrane
We wait for you at the Balmaceda airport and we then move along the Carretera Austral until you reach Puerto Río Tranquilo, located 180 kilometers from Coyhaique. Here we are going to visit the famous Marble Chapels that are rock formations in the middle of Lake General Carrera.
Then we continue the trip along the Carretera Austral until we reach the town of Cochrane, where we will camp on the river bank. There we have a bonfire and light a grill to eat with a delicious wine.
Day 2: Descent to the Colonia Sector
What you will visit:
- 1 Baker River
At 8:30 a.m. we get up and prepare our crossing by the Baker River. We are sailing for approximately 5 hours while we contemplate the landscape until we reach the second camp, Colonia sector.
Dinner at the camp with the visit of some shops in the sector.
Day 3: Descent to the El Salto Baker Sector
What you will visit:

We leave at 8:30 am and begin the navigation of the Baker River until we reach El Saltón. This day we have our first class 3 rapids. We can also appreciate waterfalls, birds and native forests of Patagonia. Once installed in the camp, we rest and go walking to know the San Carlos pass that was made by the pioneers of the area and declared a National Monument.
We finish the day with an exquisite patagonian barbecue and a red wine enjoying the high snowy summits that the Region of Aysén gives us in the Chilean Patagonia.
Day 4: Trekking to San Carlos Pass and Visit to Caleta Tortel
What you will visit:
- 1 Caleta Tortel
We leave at 8:30 a.m. to the San Carlos pass. Then we walk around 3 hours to resume the Carretera Austral.
We arrive at Caleta Tortel, which is a town whose architecture is characterized by its cypress wooden footbridges, where the Baker River flows into the sea.
Accommodation in a hostel in Caleta Tortel.
Day 5: Visit to the Confluence and Camping Facility
What you will visit:
- 1 Baker River
8:30 am: Return to Puerto Bertrand. The experience of the waters of the Baker River is completed by visiting the confluence of the Baker and Neff Rivers.
We prepare the camp and then we go to bed early for the activities of the following day.
Day 6: Rafting and return to Coyhaique
What you will visit:
- 1 Baker River
8:30 am we leave from the camp to go down the Baker River rapids, 3/3 +class. The rafting starts at Lake Bertrand and lasts approximately 2 hours. Once the adventure is over, we return to Coyhaique along the Carretera Austral.
We arrive at the base camp and enjoy a delicious farewell dinner.
Day 7: Coyhaique-Balmaceda
What you will visit:
- 1 Coyhaique
At the time of your flight, we will take you to Balmaceda airport. In case you travel during the afternoon, you will have the morning free to do some excursion, horseback riding or city tour for Coyhaique for an additional cost.
- Accommodation in tent for 5 nights and 1 night in a hostel in Caleta Tortel.
- Full board food service: breakfast, lunch, dinner. Vegetarians or other dietary needs have to inform at the time of acquiring the program
- Land transportation service of the program.
- All activities mentioned in the program (necessary safety equipment, guides, tickets to reservations).
- Safety talk, maneuvers and rescues in raft, permanent instruction during the whole trip
- Fully equipped rafts (lightweight rowing, class 5 lifejacket, custom neoprene suit, neoprene booties, semi-dry paddling jackets, helmets)
- Complete camping equipment (tents for two and three people, awning, inflatable mats, kitchen equipment)
- Security and emergency elements, VHF radio, satellite phone, complete kit
- Specialized guides with training in outdoor leadership schools (OutwardBound, Nols) certified in intensive courses of first aid in wild areas WFR (wildernessfirst respond) by specialized entities such as Nols Medicine Institute and ECSI. Rescue white water certification, Tandem Rescate and SAR Chile.
