Grows between 50 and 60 cm. It is a duck with a long and pointed tail and with a dark-colored bun or crest which at times is not easily seen because it is located in the back of the neck. The coloration is grey or brown in general. The speculum is copper red with a green shine, limited to the back by a black band with a purple shine. Lives in lakes, lagoons, and rivers.

Distribution: One of the subspecies lives from the Maule lake to the Cape Horn; the other, the northern Crested Duck, between Arica and Curicó, in the high mountain range.
