The Great Atacama Safari includes old mining ghost towns, plenty of nature while visiting different National Parks. Driving along the pacific coast you'll marble with the picturesque fishing villages, the geoglifes and the indigenous groups along the journey.
Day 1: San Pedro de Atacama (2.500 mts) – National Reserve Pampa del Tamarugal (950 mts)
9:00 am. Departing from San Pedro we’ll head to Machuca, a small little town with an active shepherd lifestyle, great architecture design and a beautiful church. We’ll continue with ¨Vado Putana¨, high altitude swamp, full of the richness Altiplano Wildlife, Caspana Village and its gorgeous terrazas cultivars.
Later on, we’ll go through Loa River canon towards ¨Lasana Pukara Fortress¨ ruins, following to Chiu-Chui Town, and it’s famous first Chilean church, were we’ll have lunch.
On the afternoon, we’ll drive across the Atacama Desert and the Geoglifes to get to the magic “El Huarango Lodge”, where we sleep at a nice glamping site, surrounded by stars while enjoying a fire.
Tranche Day 1: 502 km
Day 2: N.R Pampa del Tamarugal (950 mts) – Natural Monument Salar de Surire (4.200 mts)
9:00 am. We depart to the Andes Range and then drive up 3.200 mts to arrive to National Reserve Isluga where we have a nice lunch at the wilderness and do a hike.
We’ll head north to get to N.M Salar de Surire where we’ll stay at the park cabins at 4.200 mts.
Tranche Day 2: 331 km
Day 3: Natural Monument Salar de Surire (4.200 mts) – Putre (3.500 mts)
9:00 am. After and outdoor buffet breakfast, we’ll hike around Salar de Surire, to get a closer view of the birdlife.
On the way to National Park Lauca, we’ll drive an Aymara indigenous area, where we may see many vicuñas and wildlife.
We’ll get to Lago Chungara, highest lake of the world, to enjoy a nice sunset.
Tranche Day 3: 218 km
Day 4: Putre (3.500 mts) – Codpa (1.950 mts)
9:00 am. We’ll start our day with a morning hike around Putre and then continue our drive towards the village of Belen, Tignamar, curvy dirt road descending on narrow gorges and canyons, visiting middle age villages with gorgeous architecture. We’ll have an outdoor lunch before we get to the oasis of Codpa.
Tranche Day 4: 160 km
Day 5: Codpa (1.950 mts) – Iquique (14 mts)
9:00 am. We’ll have a morning walking around Codpa, driving down to the sea level, to get to the fishing village of Pisagua, where we’ll enjoy a well deserved fish and sea fruits lunch, before getting to Iquique. We’ll stop at the UNESCO protected old mining city of Humberstone and by night we’ll walk around the historic center on Iquique, with nice Victorian style houses.
Tranche Day 5: 370 km
Day 6: Iquique (14 mts) - San Pedro de Atacama (2.500 mts)
9:00 am. We’ll start driving along the Pacific Ocean towards the industrial city of Tocopilla to enjoy a nice lunch at the local market. On the afternoon, we’ll drive to Maria Helena’s old mining city. Then we’ll head towards San Pedro de Atacama.
