The capital of Chile is entertaining, full of culture, quality cuisine and outdoor panoramas. These are the 10 things you can’t stop doing if you visit Santiago.
Santiago is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, with a wide gastronomic offer, luxury hotels, neighborhoods with personality, museums, history and cultural tradition. But not only the urban style stands out, our capital is just an hour from the ski centers in the mountains and two, from the beach.
In Santiago you will always find something to do, but to make your task easier, here we list your must-sees:
1. Civic Center:
The heart of the founding area of Santiago is the Plaza de Armas, where the Cathedral, the Central Post Office and the Municipality of Santiago are located. From there we recommend you take a walk through the most characteristic streets until you reach the Palacio de la Moneda. Once there, don’t miss the Cultural Center La Moneda, which is characterized by its exhibitions of local and international artists.
2. Lastarria, Fine Arts and Santa Lucia Hill.
Lastarria and Bellas Artes are two neighborhoods that are characterized by being full of coffee shops, pubs and restaurants, as well as designer shops and clothing. They are perfect for an afternoon walk, a coffee break, and then continue to Cerro Santa Lucia and see Santiago at sunset from its summit. In the area there are also the Museum of Fine Arts and the GAM, two important cultural centers of the city.
3. Bellavista and Pablo Neruda's house:
This is the favorite neighborhood of many, it is the center of Santiago's nightlife. Here you will find restaurants for all tastes, bars and discos. A must do to dance salsa is Maestra Vida. In the area there is also La Chascona, the fascinating house of Pablo Neruda in Santiago.
4. Cerro San Cristóbal
You can get on the funicular, walking or cycling, whatever the way, at the end of the road you will find a spectacular view of the city. You can picnic in one of its gardens and then enjoy the scenery.
5. La Vega and the Central Market
In many occasions, the markets reflect the personality of the cities, so we recommend you visit La Vega, the most important fruit and vegetable fair in Santiago, where you will find different colors, aromas and accents. Then the invitation is for the Central Market, where you can try one of the many sea dishes characteristic of our country.
6. Museum of memory and human rights
This cultural space is dedicated to the events that took place in Chile during the military dictatorship, between September 11, 1973 and March 10, 1990.
7. Barrio Italia
This is a perfect neighborhood for a Sunday morning walk looking at its shops and a brunch in one of its many restaurants.
8. Vineyards of the Maipo Valley
Chile is characterized by the good quality of its wines, and you can try them and know some of the vineyards that produce them. Near Santiago you can find the Concha y Toro vineyard in Pirque, the Cousiño Macul and Undurraga vineyards in Buin, and the Santa Rita vineyard in Alto Jahuel among others.
9. Ski Centers
One hour from Santiago are Farellones, Colorado and Valle Nevado, three ski centers in the middle of the Andes mountain range. Even if you don’t go skiing, it's worth the trip to appreciate the incredible view of the mountains and if you're lucky, the odd condor.
10. Cajón del Maipo, the Embalse el Yeso
It's the Santiaguinean's getaway. A valley where you can go for the day, camping and trekking. One of the most popular places to visit is Embalse el Yeso, which is characterized by its photogenic landscape.
