Puerto Octay is a village located on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, 50 kilometers from Puerto Varas. It is characterized by its traditional architecture coming from the first German settlers who arrived in the Region of Los Lagos.
There are different activities related to water sports such as kayaking, fly fishing and swimming among others. Among the most visited beaches are Las Cascadas, La Baja, Playa Maitén and Centinela.
Gastronomy
This area of the country cuisine is known for good food, has a great variety of traditional food due to the influence of the mapuche, but also the German influence that arrived in the country.
Within typical dishes is the curanto, a soup made with meat, sausages seafood and potatoes, chapaleles, which are a mixture of potatoes and flour cooked in the broth of the curanto, milcao which is also made from potatoes, since it is one of the most important foods in the area along with meat and seafood.
On the other hand the German influence has allowed this area to be characterized by their cakes and pies of berries and fruits that grow in the place such as raspberries, blueberries or Myrtle.
The weather on this place is oceanic and rainy, with a bit of Mediterranean influence, there’s abundant and constant rainfall, even in summer. The annual average temperature is 11° C.
We advise you to wear clothes that are suitable for rain, because the weather is constantly changes at any time of the year.
Stores in rural areas are open all day, but they close between 13.00 and 15.00. We advise you to carry local currency (Chilean pesos), since it isn’t possible to pay with debit or credit cards in kiosks and rural stores.
