We leave from the hotel in San Pedro de Atacama to visit some villages of Atacama Andina located in the sector called Alto del Loa.
We then begin the tour with the town of Chiu Chiu, located 33 kilometers from the city of Calama, at an altitude of 2,525 meters. It was founded by the Spanish and stands out for its Church, San Antonio de Chiu Chiu, which was built shortly before 1675 and is the oldest in our country. It was the first village in the Loa river sector, where hunter-gatherer villages settled about 1,000 years BC. Then, 10 kilometers along the banks of the river, among beautiful orchards bordered by high cliffs we can see numerous petroglyphs (carved drawings in stone) made from the year 400 until the arrival of the Spaniards.
We continue our route to Lasana, where we will find one of the oldest fortresses of our country, the Pukará de Lasana, which was built in the 12th century. You can see its stone architecture and its defensive walls. On the other side of the Pukará, you can appreciate the evergreen valley with its typical crops of the area.
Then we are going to continue towards Caspana, located 84 kilometers from Calama. It is a village that is in the midst of ravines and stands out for its crops of fruits, vegetables and flowers in terraces perfectly delineated by stones. It is a town that maintains its ancestral traditions intact and represents the testimony and the richness of the Andean culture of the area.
Once we have traveled the town, we return to the city of Calama and take the road that goes to San Pedro de Atacama.
