The wonderful Atacama Desert, also known as the driest in the world,combines with mountains, lakes and dunes, and the reflecting light of dawn and dusk to show you ever-changing landscapes. On this trip you will enjoy salt flats, highland lakes, Chilean indigenous peoples, local food and amazing geysers. Embark on an adventure and see all the highlights northern Chile has to offer in a taylor-made and comfortable trip.
Day 1: Airport - Archaeological Tour
We will pick you up at the airport in Calama to take you to the hotel in San Pedro de Atacama. You will have the day off to explore the town or to rest from the trip.
In the afternoon, we will visit the most important archaeological sites of the area and will travel to the past to learn about the origin of the Atacama or Licanantai culture, the Pukara de Quitor is not only important for the local history, but it is for the history of Chile through the battle of Quitor (1540) one of the first conflicts between Spaniards and Indians.
In the Atacama farm we will see how a family combines the ancestral traditions of agriculture and livestock with tourism, tasting some local products, then the Tulor village, corresponds to the oldest settlement in the basin of the Salt Flat of Atacama and one of the first tests of sedentary lifestyles in the region.
And finally we will move to the Centre of San Pedro de Atacama to travel back in time up to the time of the colony, where one of the most symbolic is the Church of San Pedro, built and preserved until today from adobe, cactus wood, chañar and algarrobo, a national monument since 1951.
Day 2: Valle de la Luna - Valle de la Muerte
After breakfast, we will head towards the Valle de la Luna, located 19 km from San Pedro, in the Cordillera de la Sal, declared a nature sanctuary and Natural Monument protected by the uniqueness of its scenic beauty.
You will also appreciate the Valle de los Dinosaurios and Valle de la Muerte, where you will have a spectacular view of the environment. Continue en route to the Moon Valley , where you will find geological formations.
In the afternoon we will leave from San Pedro and 35 kms northeast, where we will find the Purifica River, which is where the Guatin Canyon starts. We begin our trek along the river and observe abundant high Andean vegetation, and a pair of settlements such as storage warehouses and old rooms, all these surrounded by numerous giant cactus
Day 3: Salar de Tara - Monjes de la Pacana
During the morning we will leave toward the mountain range taking the international road that connects us with Argentina through the Paso Jama, we will pass by a bofedal originated by the rio Quepiaco, in this place we will enjoy the beautiful contrast between the mountain range and the vegetation that turns this area into an habitat of different birds as flamencos, Taguas and Ducks.
We will continue to the Monjes de la Pacana Monks of the Pecan, remains of volcanic sediment eroded by the wind and the water are the faithful testimony of large eruptions over millions of years ago, despite this environment is generous and allows us to enjoy despite the weather, in a landscape of great beauty.
We end up in the Salar de Tara Salt Flat Tara, visitors say it is one of the most beautiful places among the attractions of San Pedro de Atacama, we will make a short walk along the cathedrals, the Salt Lake rich in flora and fauna and we will enjoy the silence and tranquility in these times, hard to find.
Day 4: Geysers del Tatio - Highland Towns
We will leave in the morning from the hotel in San Pedro de Atacama and arrive at the Geysers del Tatio, located in the Andes Mountains 89 km. from San Pedro, where we will see the fumaroles spectacles at dawn. We will have breakfast and you can bathe in the hot springs, with an average temperature of 36 ° C.
Then we will drive until we reach the town of Caspana, with about 400 inhabitants, which takes place in an environment of agricultural crops and small livestock. Like many other highland towns, Caspana is very high, at 3,305 meters above sea level and through the kindness of the Pacha Mama, it has a permanent irrigation from the Caspana River that promotes agricultural crop terraces.
Later on, we will arrive at Lasana Valley, where we will visit its imposing Pukará, an atacameña stone fortress built between the ninth and twelfth centuries, reflecting the splendor of this culture. Finally, we will go to Chiu Chiu to visit the church of San Francisco, the oldest of Chile, also declared a National Monument.
Day 5: Laguna Cejar / Salar de Atacama
On our last day in San Pedro, we will have to choose between the following trips:
Option 1: Laguna Cejar
Inside the Atacama Salt Flat will visit the Cejar lagoon, its waters with high salt content have a large buoyancy effect which makes a bath a relaxing and fun experience, everything is complemented by the beautiful landscape of turquoises waters, volcanoes and the greatness of the salt flat.
Then we will visit the Ojos del Salar, two wells for fresh water in the middle of the desert and finally into the Tebinquinche lagoon we will enjoy an aperitif watching the reflection of the Andes in its waters, along with the whiteness of the salt, the evening will give a show in our eyes, an unforgettable experience.
Option 2: Salar de Atacama
To the south of San Pedro de Atacama we will find Toconao, our first stop, this village was built with stone Liparita, we will visit its square full of history with its bell tower constructed in 1750 of adobe and wood of cactus and the Church of San Lucas, both national monuments. In the Valley of Jere we will see the real wealth of the Toconares, a cannon that due to its microclimate and the waters that come down from the mountains, it enjoys fertility and turns the sector into one of the most green places of the desert, we will see orchards of fruit trees and varied flora.
Finally will visit the Soncor sector of the great Salt Flat of Atacama, National Reserve de los Flamencos at Laguna Chaxa we shall enjoy the varied species of birds and the color of flamingos, the deep blue sky of Atacama, the heights of the andean volcanoes and the red sunset will give us the farewell.
