Orongo is an archaeological place located on the Rano Kau volcano. It was built in order to worship the God Make Make, and the tournament Tangata-manu (bird man) that only took place some times during the year. In this excursion, you’ll learn more about the Rapa Nui culture, and you’ll also get to know the Rano Kau volcano lagoon.

We’ll start our tour around 09:30. From Hanga Roa to the Tahai Archaeological Complex, a very important archaeological center of Easter Island.

Then, we will visit the natural cave of Ana Kai Tangata, where it’s possible to appreciate some cave paintings that represent birds like the “manutara” and where it’s possible to see the waves bursting on the cliffs. We will continue our tour heading to the vulcano Rano Kau. We’ll spend some time around the lagoon, which is one of the largest reserves of fresh water in the place.

Nearing the end of the tour, we will visit Orongo’s Ceremonial Village, which is located in the west summit of the Rano kau volcano. This city is composed of about 53 houses that have an elliptical shape with walls made of slabs and a small square entrance that looks at the sea. In this place it was held the most important ceremony of the second period of Easter Island, the election of Tangata Manu (bird man). This ceremony stopped about 150 years ago, thanks to the arrival of the first Christian missionaries.
