With an surface area of 2,500 hectares, Lake Elizalde is the most well known lake in the Aysén Region. It is part of a group of five lakes draining towards West, to Puerto Aysén. You can reach this place through a gravel road.
Lake Elizalde measures an average of 25. km in length and 2 km. width and it is surrounded by dense forests of Chiloé's Coigue and Lenga Beech. Its features make it an ideal location for recreational activities that allow to explore the area, do some sport fishing, horseback riding or bike excursions. There's also a camping area where you can also find refuge, and a small lodging house called "La Cascada".
Near the west shore of the lake there is lake Caro. Both can be toured in small vessels.
Gastronomy
The typical dish of the region is the Lamb, which should pass through with a sword and bake the embers in a way inverted for a little more than two hours and a half. This is a long and familiar process served with potatoes, rice or various salads and inevitable pebre.
Fish are also an essential part of the gastronomy of the Aysén Region, as in many regions of the country there is a great variety of fish and shellfish that are a contribution to the typical dishes of the area. Within the most consumed fish is salmon, eel and hake, which are combined with different seafood such as shrimp and King crab.
In terms of beverages, in this area there is a tradition to drink wine in a leather boot, as tradition Spanish and also taken calafate sour, an alcoholic beverage prepared with lemon, pineapple juice, pisco and calafate, which is a result of the branch of the berries. It is also used for the preparation of cakes, kitchen.
The weather in this place is both rainy maritime (in the coastal zone and fiords) and cold near the mountains). It rains all year round, even in summer. The average annual temperature is 8°C.
It is advisable to wear clothes that are suitable for rain.
Make sure you buy everything you need in the big cities. The rest of the towns have limited stock of things, and the prices are higher than in the city.
Stores in rural areas are open all day, but they close between 13.00 and 15.00. We advise you to carry local currency (Chilean pesos), since it isn’t possible to pay with debit or credit cards in kiosks and rural stores.
